Effects of albumin dialysis (MARS) and therapeutic apheresis on bilirubin reduction and kidney function in patients with acute on chronic liver failure. A case-control study.
During the last decades artificial liver support systems have been developed. In particular, Albumin Dialysis (MARS, Molecular Adsorbent Recircuating System), FPSA (Fractionated Plasma Separation and Adsorption) and Plasma Exchange (PE) seems to be able to remove molecules involved in the pathophysiology of liver failure. MARS and PE are available in our Centre; the indications and efficacy of these techniques are not completely clear.
